Basic Concepts to Lose that Belly
Dieting, Goals, Tips March 18th, 2006
I’ve been doing some research and talking to people in online health forums to try and figure out a fitness program that will help me to lose my belly fat efficiently. Basically here are some of the main concepts that I keep coming across as I’m reading up on articles and receiving tips from others.
- Cardio. Cardio. Cardio. There’s no way around this one. For one to lose weight, one must do a lot of cardio. How much? I’m going to aim at 40 minutes of cardio a day. Breaking that down equates to 20 minutes on the treadmill and 20 minutes on the either the elliptical or cycling machine.
- Resistance Training. Rather than hitting the free weights and going nuts like the typical gym rat, one must concentrate on resistance training. This means light weights and high number of reps, use those cable machines. People recommend that you focus 20% of your time on resistance training and the rest on cardiovascular exercise. I will spend 20 minutes on these exercises.
- Don’t eat 20 Big Macs. This one is pretty obvious, but I think the main point is to be aware of your caloric intake. Just remember that the more calories you take in, the more you must work off. So if you really hate doing cardio, do yourself a favor and eat a lighter diet.

Good advice. How would you recommend it to larger people like myself who rarely ever have a bodyfat percentage lower than 18% if we were to want to get a 6 pack going?
