Podfitness.com Review
Product Review March 31st, 2006“Put a personal trainer right on your iPod - mixed with your own music.”
Working out with a personal trainer can help you to achieve your fitness goals. However a major problem is that most people don’t have the time or money; Podfitness is the new option that could change the way many people work out. This is the new online service that will put the personal fitness trainers for celebrities like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton right on your iPod. The Podfitness website claims that you will get a personal and customized workout based on your specific goal, music preference and of course, trainer preference. The website doesn’t explain how the technology works, which made me want to try it out even more. I finally downloaded and installed the software when I got home, here’s a review.
Setup Experience The program was about a 15 MB download and installation was a breeze. Once you get this program installed and you log in for the first time, it prompts you to create a fitness profile and then proceeds to take you through the steps in creating your customized workout. The workout selection process is basically a 3 step process.
Step 1 you choose your goal from a list of goals that matches your fitness profile. Each goal has a basic description on what it’s about and explains that you can change your goal at any time. I chose Body Shaping since I kind of want to somehow shape my beer belly into a six pack.
Step 2. Once you’ve selected a goal, you then choose a trainer from the list where they have a picture and short bio for each and every trainer (there are quite a few). You can choose from a premier trainer or a featured trainer, I think the premier trainers are the celebrity trainers. I choose David Kirsch because he looks like a smart guy and he’s trained supermodels like Heidi Klum and Linda Evangelista. As soon as you select your trainer, they show you a list of workout programs that this trainer has for the goal that you selected. Every trainer has different workout programs for your goal, some have 3 or more programs, some only have 1. In this case I choose a program called Beach Bootcamp because it sounds hardcore and I love beaches. Oh I forgot another thing, in addition to your trainer, you get an assistant trainer which can be either a male or female. The assistant trainer helps you out with workout details like counting your reps for you.
In step 3, after you’ve picked your trainer and workout program it shows you the iTunes playlists. From there on you basically choose one of your playlists to mix the trainer’s program into. Picked my Techno playlist since this is the playlist I am currently listening to while I’m working out. The mixing part is a little tricky but the only thing you have to remember to do before clicking on “mix” is to click and drag all the songs that you want to be mixed with your customized workout program into another area. Since my workout program is about 55 minutes long, I selected some songs that matched up to be about 55 mins. After that you just click on “mix” and the program downloads the customized mix from the Podfitness server and then proceed to mix and encode the program. This process takes about 2 or 3 minutes and after it’s done, your iTunes will have a new playlist named Podfitness. If you read all that, you might think this program is complicated to use. Actually, before downloading and trying this out, I thought it was going to be hard to use just by reading what the website said. My experience using the Podfitness software was a different story, it is a piece of cake. They made the steps and explainations so simple that almost anyone can do it (except for the tricky part in mixing). However, I think you have to be careful using this software if you have a really old computer. When this program was mixing the workout with my songs, I noticed that it was sucking up a lot of CPU power from my computer. I went through it without a single glitch but keep in mind that I have a new and fast machine.
Listening Experience I was as anxious to hear my customized workout as I was in installing Podfitness. So naturally, I played my new workout program as soon as it was done, I didn’t wait to take it the gym. Here’s my verdict for the listening experience, absolutely awesome! The sound clarity was great but that’s no surprise because it’s an iPod. However, hearing your own music fade in and fade out as the trainer is talking to you about the workout program is just amazing. Sometimes when you’re doing your workout and your assistant trainer is counting, your premier trainer will remind you to keep your back straight in the right side headphone, it’s like he’s actually standing to your right and talking to you. Podfitness has really impressed me, I can’t wait to take my day 1 program to the gym on Monday. I think this is going to be huge in the fitness world because over half of the people at my gym are wearing iPods when they work out. Now that I’ve experienced the software, I will do another quick review of my workout experience with Podfitness. By the way, they have a free 3 day trial going on right now.
EDIT: Podfitess.com currently has a 21 day free trial.

Not sure what is happening with this site. They have taken forever to launch but I still cant login. All I can do is listen to the sample download. Which by the way is not the most inspiring. I hope the real programs are a lot better than this.

Yeah the site is kind of weird. It took me a while to figure out how to sign up. I wouldn’t know what to do about a non-working login though, maybe their tech support could help?

Hi. Did you do a Day 2 workout with the same trainer? My expectation was that any program like “Beach Boot Camp” will have a different workout each day - based on the same program style/philosophy. I strated out with “Power In An Hour Strenght Training” and loved Day 1. So I downloaded and mixed Day 2. And got the exact same workout with my new playlist. I thought there may be a mistake or that the trainer (Teddy Bass) likes to do each routine twise. So I downloaded Day 3. I got the same routine. I did it once more just to be sure. Day 4 was identical too!
How did your Day 2 go? Is this what happens with all Programs?
Thanks.

It shouldn’t be the same workout each day. I am doing one of the stability ball programs and it changes each day. Have you tried it since?

I have had mucho problems w/ this program. First there were issues getting logged in. I had to go back and sign up 4-5 times. That concerned me, since I didn’t want to be charged 5 times in my credit card. After talking to tech support 3 times, it was something wrong on their end that took 1/2 the day to fix. Then I had to fill in my personal information about 3 times before the program accepted it. When that finally worked, I went to mix the tunes w/ the fitness program, I keep getting an exception error channel 59822. I had to call back and talk to Jace again (pretty bad when you are on a first-name basis w/ the tech support after only one day…and six phone calls), and he had to submit another trouble ticket. I’m hoping that things improve from here. Right now this program is looking pretty buggy.

Hi Noelle,
I discontinued after the 10 day trial because I found it too buggy. I tried quite a few programs but had the same issue with each - successive workouts had little to no variation. On one occassion I even got a wrong workout (Day 2 of Jeannette Jenkins Advanced Cardio Sculpt - which incidentally I loved - I got Jeanette’s Walk,Run Hike instead)
I discontinued on May 16. So if you signed up after me, perhaps the bug was fixed. Or maybe some programs dont have the issue and others do. (I wrote more than once to support letting them know of this problem but did not hear back.)
If they fix the major bugs, I will be glad to sign back up. I really like the idea and some of the programs.
I have been scanning the web for reviews to check if the issues are being sorted out, but did not find any in-depth reviews from people who had used multiple programs on a fairly extensive basis.

I think they are still in the beta-testing phase, so that may be why so many people are having problems. I’ve been told the program will be much better once they’ve worked out all the bugs and that should be about 2 weeks from now.

I’m in the middle of the 10-day trial myself. I haven’t done one program, but I’ve listened to them and they sound great. I’m definitely going to cancel before my 10 days are up because it is still (as of July 15) very buggy. For example:
When you are on the last step of mixing the music with the workout track, sometimes I’ve had to turn off my computer after 20 minutes because it never ended.
I can’t find some workouts after I’ve downloaded them! Then I realized that they were under the name “Workout” with no album name, artist name or genre.
I definitely did not like it that I couldn’t add the music I got from iTunes. I almost canceled it immediately because I buy almost all my music from iTunes. I didn’t cancel because I figured out how to convern all my iTunes music to Mp3s, and now it works perfectly.
If Podfitness people read these reviews, I suggest they also try to recruit celebrities to the mixes — just to shake it up a bit. Not only celebrities but different voice actors with different dialects or languages. My sister and I were thinking how funny it would be for one day to have Queen Latifah saying to you: “Girrrrrrrllllll!! You betta GIT yo’ butt up and git to walkin’! I Faster! Faster!” Or even Tom Cruise promising to wink at you in his next film if you do just one more mile. A lady with a Jamaican accent would also be hilarious and different languages would only be a plus.
Wow - didn’t expect to write so much. Sorry!

Hey just wanted to give an update, Podfitness released as 1.0 back around November and is no longer suffering from the bugs you may have encountered earlier. Micaela I think thats a great idea, I will pass it up the chain! Roy, I am just curious, can you mix marinaonline.com workouts with you’re own music?
March 28th, 2007 at 5:57 am
Marina writes all of the music for the workouts based on the fitness routine you are doing. She weaves the lyrical content in and out of her spoken instructions… sometimes she just talks about healthy lifestyle while you walk. Her songs are all made for fitness and are very motivating. She makes 10 minute programs as well as 30 minutes and up so you can “mix & match” them with any other programs, like your own music. Try running to a slow hip hop track compared to a track running at 160 BPM. The experience is amazing. Marina’s workouts are going to be available in health clubs around the country through a new MP3 Kiosk system being unveiled today at IHRSA fitness industry trade show.

I was having trouble with IE6 interating with Itunes on a Win 2000 Machine. Solution: Download the webbrowser FoxFire. It has all the features of IE7 and works great with PodFitness!
Good Luck!

Rob D, you mean the FireFox web browser not FoxFire. ;-)

Hi! I actually work for Podfitness Support. I apologize we’re so late to the party here, but I wanted to let you know that we’re 100% committed to taking care of every customer issue.
We are always more than happy to troubleshoot any problems that any members are experiencing. We can usually find out what the cause is by asking a few quick questions.
To Dalkin, Vrinda, Tami, Paige, and Micaela: Sorry to hear about the problems you experienced. Things have come a long way and many bugs have been fixed at this point. I would be more than happy to give you a 30 day free trial so you can see for yourself how awesome it is. You can call 1-888-476-3348 and ask for Dave or send an email to support@podfitness.com attention Dave so I can personally assist you. We are currently testing the new version which is looking great and we hope to have it out to the public within the next month.
To Roy: What sets our service a part from others is the fact that the workouts are customized to your profile information and you get to mix your own music with the customized. However, offering our own music source is something that may happen in the future.
This product enables anyone to do some complex audio mixing/editing but essentially all the user has to do is click mix, then the program does the rest. That being said, there are possible points of failure.
Here are some tips for troubleshooting the most common problems:
1. Make sure the Podfitness program (mixer) is running. On a PC, a small Podfitness icon will show up near the clock. On a Mac, the Podfitness icon will be in the dock with a small black arrow under it. It will also say “select a playlist” at the Podfitness dashboard.
2. Make sure there is nothing wrong with the playlist. Make sure you don’t add any music that would be copy protected (music purchased from itunes store for example). The problem with the music purchased from itunes store (and others) is because of the DRM (digital rights management) that comes with their music.
3. As Rob found: I too would recommend logging into your Podfitness account using Mozilla Firefox as your browser if you experience problems using Explorer (I’m not sure about FoxFire though;) Although it is completely compatible with Explorer, this has been known to be the easy fix for problems caused by interference with the mixing, which is typically due to the user’s Explorer settings. You may even find that you like it better than Explorer as many do. It’s also thought by many to be the safest browser out there. You can download it right here: http://www.firefox2008.com/us/

Just wanted to say I am very pleased with Podfitness! It has been fantastic - I’ve done about ten workouts so far, and it’s taken way beyond what I could have done on my own. I’ve had dramatic changes in my body, so I will definitely continue with the service! It’s so affordable and fits right into any budget.
The only bug I’ve come across is once in awhile the trainer will talk about something that does pertain to the current exercise, but that has only happened twice. For what I’m getting out of it, a small issue like that doesn’t both me at all
