The tool that is typically used to calculate whether or not you’re obese is the Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator. To be obese you have to have a BMI of 30 or more, I am currently at about 25 which is considered slightly overweight. A recent national obesity study done by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the number of American men and women who are obese has yet again increased.

Here are some alarming findings that were recently presented…

  • In 2003-2004, 17.1% of 2- to 19-year-olds were obese, 13.9% increase from 1999-2000 and 15.4% increase from 2001-02
  • Number of Overweight kids has increased, up from 30% in 2001-02 to 33.6% in 2003-04
  • Overall adult obesity increased from 30.6% in 2001-02 to 32.2% in 2003-04
  • In 2003-04, 66.3% of adults were overweight, compared with 64.5% in 1999-2000 and 65.7% in 2001-02.

How is this happening? Am I right when I say we Americans are some of the most health conscious people when it comes to what we eat? Maybe we just can’t resist eating all the juicy burgers and drinking endless cans of beer.
