317214_dumpell.jpgA new study presented at the American Heart Association Conference has found that strength training may help prevent belly fat.164 overweight and obese people were split into two groups.  One gropu did an hour of weight training twice a a week and the other group did 30 to 60 minutes of various exercises a day.  The researchers found that the weight training group had an average of 7% increase in intra-abdominal fat whereas the other group had a 21% increase.

14% difference is quite a bit, which leads me to wonder if the various-exercise group actually exercised or slacked off.  From personal experience, I have always been more dedicated at weight training compared to other types of exercises.  Usually I would get better results from weights simply because I follow a strict routine and I hate cardio exercises.  Another thing is if I were told to do various-exercises 30-60 minutes a day, I would consider golfing and other low intensity sports as an exercise.  So if most of the participants in this research are like me, I can see how there can be such a big difference in results.

This is the problem that I have with the media, it seems that our "experts" and "researchers" are constantly going back and forth on what we should eat, how we should exercise, and how we should take care of ourselves.  I've always heard that if you want to lose belly fat, you must do cario and lots of it.  Now we hear that may not be the case.  In the past we were told that we should drink plenty of water, 3 liters a day.  Recently, I heard that if you drink too much water and you're an athelete, your blood might get too thin and you might die.  And we all know about the Atkin's craze.
