Metabolic syndrome is a medical term given for a cluster of abnormal conditions such as obeisity, high blood pressure, etc.  People with metabolic syndrome are 2x more likely to die of heart disease.

Here are some conditions that may determine if you have metabolic syndrome.

1. Obesity. Measure your waist at your navel. If your waist is 35 inches or more (for women) or 40 inches or more (for men), you have abdominal obesity. A beer belly or "apple-shaped" body is more common in men. But while women are more likely to be a "pear-shaped," they can also be apple-shaped.

2. High triglyceride levels increase the risk of heart disease.  A level of 150 mg/dL or lower is considered normal.

3. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. The more of this good cholesterol, the better. Normal values are between 40 and 50 mg/dL for men.

4. Blood pressure. Even though a pressure of 130/85 is only in the range of "pre-hypertension," it's enough to contribute to a diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome.

5. Blood sugar.   Modest elevations of 110 or higher are enough to be counted toward a diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome.
