story9_2.gifMyth: Carbohydrates are fattening.
Fact: Calories are fattening, not carbs.  Each gram of carb contains 4 calories, which is the same as a gram of protein.

Myth: All carbs are the same.
Fact: There are simple, refined carbs (the bad) and then there are fibrous, complex carbs (the good).  One should not avoid carbs completely but rather choose the good carb over the bad.  This means eating brown rice instead of white (white rice with soy sauce doesn't count), whole wheat pasta instead of regular pasta, and whole wheat bread instead of plain white bread.

Myth: Breakfast should consist of only fruits
Fact: Most fruits are not very high in complex carbohydrates, which the body needs after an all-night fast.  However, fruits are are good source of fibre and vitamins.  Look to whole grain variety bread or cereal for a much better source of carbs.

Refined carbs are found in:
Baked goods: muffins, donuts, pastries, cookies, cakes
White flour and white flour products such as white bread and bagels
Snack foods: candies, chips, pretzels
Sweetened dairy products: ice cream, chocolate milk
Drinks: pop/soda, juice
Processed grain products: Pasta made from white flour, white rice, rice cakes, many breakfast cereals
