Setting and Determining Your Priorities Part II
Goals, Inspiration January 26th, 2008
Have you given thought to what your Top 10 Priorities are for this year yet? Have you thought about how you will go about reaching those goals? It’s not as hard as you think, just follow the two simple steps below and you will already be ahead of most people. Most people stay where they are at because of inaction and laziness. The two steps below shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes of your time; 45 minutes to determine what your 10 most important priorities are that will have a lasting impact on your life!
1. A Practical Way to Determine Your Priorities
Try to think clearly about what your most important priorities are, document these priorities, and use the document as a daily, weekly, and quarterly guide for your planning and achievement. The best way to start is with a blank sheet of paper. Ask yourself this question: “Between now and the end of this fiscal year, what most deserves my best attention?” Give yourself a few minutes to write everything down that comes to mind - don’t censor yourself, just write it all down so that you can visually see it afterwards.
Then do something else for 30 minutes, to let your mind clear. When you come back, start on a new blank sheet and draw a line down the middle from top to bottom. From your notes, pick out your top ten priorities for the year, starting with the most important and write them down on the left hand column. Draw a line across the page under each of your priorities. Now, next to each one, use the space in the right column to explain why this is a top priority. Repeat this until you’ve completed all ten priorities. You can also use Excel to do this if typing is easier.
2. Check In Constantly
Your ten priorities for the year give you a huge advantage. Print out a few copies so you can keep one at the office, another one at home, and another one in your wallet or purse. Review it at least once a week, and then plan the next seven days accordingly. As you do this throughout the year, you’ll notice a growing sense of satisfaction and purpose.
